The chickens were growing up faster than anticipated and room in their pen was at a premium. They weren’t really old enough to free range yet I had been told, but as I thought about it I realized that our chickens, growing up, had free ranged from the moment they came out from under their mother. There was no reason these ones couldn’t. I knew they would be thrilled to be outside where they would have so much more freedom; not to mention bugs, grass, plants, and all the good stuff chickens love to eat.
We carried their home out into the middle of the yard and I opened the door. Expecting them to come flocking out I stepped back. They stayed right where they were. I was offering them complete freedom and they were rejecting it! Despite the fact that their current quarters were too small and uncomfortable, they were fighting amongst themselves and certainly unhappy, they would rather stay where they were then walk out into unfamiliar territory.
Hmmm. How many people do that? Christ offers us such freedom in HIM and yet we are so familiar with our lives that we refuse it! We stay in our tight spaces out of fear of all that freedom HE offers! Too often people will sit in a body of believers where there is dissension and lack of harmony, back biting, cliques, so much unhappiness and lack of true Christlike love rather than walk OUT of the familiar and IN to love and the JOY of walking with Christ in FREEDOM!!!!
Just like I offered the chickens the freedom they didn’t know they wanted, God offers us so much MORE than we can imagine! He wants each of us to discover what He has gifted us to do and then He wishes to show us just how and where to use these gifts! It’s SO exciting to watch God at work in our lives and to discover Isaiah 30:20 in our very own lives.
Although the Lord gives you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, your teachers will be hidden no more; with your own eyes you will see them.
Yes, God walks us through some tough times but He teaches us through those times! We begin to SEE our teachers EVERYWHERE!!! And I’m here to tell ya…. There is NOTHING like that.
So… learn from the chickens. Don’t let fear of the unfamiliar hold you back! Reach out past what we tend to call our comfort zones and experience TRUE Freedom!!!
